I recently read an article online that was sobering, to say the least, and made me think quite a bit about how important it is for home owners who are struggling to find a solution to their financial problems. Seems like everywhere you look (maybe if you are a struggling home owner you notice this more) there are signs and ads screaming SELL HOUSE AS IS and SELL HOUSE QUICK. While such keywords are used for many reasons, the message they send could be the solution you need.
The story I read was about a 24-year-old Ohio man who died a few months ago, as a result of a toothache that went untreated. The man, who was – like so many folks – unemployed and uninsured, had to choose between painkillers and antibiotics (because he did not have enough money for both), and he chose the painkillers. Soon after, the infection spread to his brain, and the young man died.
It is hard to put into words just how sad and frustrating it is to think of a fellow, in this great country our forefathers fought and died for, dying because he could not afford insurance or the cost of a routine dental procedure or medication…but this is the state we are in in 2011. Folks are unemployed and uninsured, and there does not seem to be a whole bunch of relief coming down the pipeline.
Obviously, the topic of our discussion is a bit different, and I am not going to directly compare this tragic episode with the man in Ohio to a situation involving struggling home owners. But, that being said, there is a connection – and as someone who has helped nearly 12,000 families to make better real estate decisions over the years, I think it important to point this out.
If you are in a difficult financial situation that is made even more extreme by the fact that you can no longer afford your mortgage, then you ARE in danger of coming out on the losing end.
